GRE/TOEFLPrep

The GRE (Graduate Record Examinations) and TOEFL iBT (Test of English as a Foreign Language) are two of the most widely required tests for admission to graduate programs abroad — the GRE mainly for graduate schools generally, and the TOEFL for demonstrating English proficiency as a non-native speaker. Both reward the same underlying skill: reading dense, unfamiliar text quickly and precisely, and reasoning carefully about vocabulary and meaning in context.

Why regular practice helps

1. Pattern familiarity — both exams reuse a small number of question formats again and again. Recognizing the format the moment you see it means you spend your time on the reasoning, not on figuring out what's being asked.
2. Reading stamina — dense academic passages get easier to parse quickly with repeated exposure, the same way any unfamiliar reading gets faster with practice.
3. Vocabulary in context — GRE Text Completion and Sentence Equivalence, and TOEFL's vocabulary-in-context questions, all reward knowing how a word is actually used, not just its dictionary definition.
4. Answering under time pressure — both exams are timed tightly enough that practice on realistic questions matters more than open-ended study.

GRE Verbal Reasoning — real exam format

The current GRE General Test (in effect since September 2023) runs about 1 hour 58 minutes across five sections. Verbal Reasoning is split into two sections with a combined 27 questions (12 questions in 18 minutes, then 15 questions in 23 minutes) — the second section's difficulty adapts to how you did on the first. Verbal Reasoning draws on three question types, all covered separately here so you can drill each one in depth:

1. Reading Comprehension (RC) — a short passage followed by one or more questions: detail, main idea, inference, the author's attitude, the role a particular sentence plays, or (in this practice set) identifying the exact sentence that performs a certain function.
2. Text Completion (TC) — a passage with one, two, or three blanks, each with its own set of close word choices; every blank must be filled correctly for the sentence to make sense as a whole.
3. Sentence Equivalence (SE) — one sentence with a single blank and six answer choices, of which exactly two produce sentences that mean essentially the same thing.

TOEFL iBT Reading — real exam format

The TOEFL iBT takes about two hours across four sections: Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking. The Reading section itself runs roughly 30 minutes of base time and covers reading skills through several task types built around academic-style passages — the exact mix can adapt to your performance. This platform's TOEFL practice pool draws on the reading skills the section is built around:

1. Traditional Comprehension — a full academic passage with several questions on it: detail, vocabulary-in-context, inference, and more, mirroring the "Read an Academic Passage" task.
2. Complete the Words — a sentence with a word partly blanked out (a starting-letter hint given) and a short set of close options, testing precise word knowledge in context.
3. Sentence Insertion — a passage with four marked positions ([A]–[D]); you identify where a given sentence fits most logically.

Unlike the GRE tab, there's no sub-choice here — one "Start Practicing" click gives you a single mixed session drawing from all three TOEFL task types above.
